David Tennant Treat 4 Today for Tuesday 24th May 2016

The David Tennant Treat 4 Today is the second production diary for Richard II from The Royal Shakespeare Company.

In this video Emma Hamilton who played the Queen in 2013 described the first day of rehearsals, including the welcome games they played to help break the ice and build rapport between the actors.

She explained how the show's Director Gregory Doran began to help them explore their characters and also explained some of the historical truth behind Richard's Queen.

David Tennant played the title role of Richard II in Stratford-upon-Avon from Thursday 10th October 2013 until Saturday 16th November 2013 (40 performances) before the production transferred to The Barbican Centre in London from 9th December 2013 until Saturday 25th January 2014 (45 performances).

David Tennant reprised his role as Richard II for The Royal Shakespeare Company during January 2016. This was part of a collaboration between The RSC and The Barbican Centre in London to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. The event was called King And Country: Shakespeare’s Great Cycle Of Kings which was a 4-play season cycle of four productions in repertoire. As well as David Tennant in Richard II, the other productions were Henry IV Parts I and II and Henry V.

The whole event ran between Saturday 7th November 2015 until Sunday 24th January 2016 but unfortunately there were only nine performances of Richard II.

The King And Country cycle of plays (including David Tennant in Richard II) transferred to the US between Thursday 24th March and Sunday 1st May 2016 at the Brooklyn Academy Of Music (BAM) Harvey Theater. David Tennant played another 10 performances of Richard II in the US.

Uncharacteristically David was lost for words in the video and humbly said that he thought there were so many people who he would give a special recognition award ahead of himself.

In the video David was asked first how he will be celebrating his Special Achievement Award. David replied "I didn't know I was going to be celebrating tonight, I thought I was coming to present an award and go home" ... " it's all just a bit much, it's all quite hard, it's a bit of an out of body experience."

David was then asked what things he can't do and he responded "I'm not very good at golf. I don't have the gift of music. I just say some lines and pretend to be someone else. I'm very thrilled that I'm allowed to do that and to get given prizes for it..it's just bewildering but I'm thrilled."

Sunday 22 May 2016

David Tennant Treat 4 Today for Sunday 22nd May 2016

Today the David Tennant Treat 4 Today is a specially written scene of Doctor Who by Russell T Davies which showed a mysterious alien aboard the TARDIS. Captain Jack (John Barrowman) was there to try and save the machine but then a special guest star appeared to put an end to things.

This scene was broadcast on John Barrowman's programme Tonight's The Night where fans had to create an alien for Doctor Who.

RTD said that he could not bear that the last lines he wrote for the Tenth Doctor to be in a non-canon episode of Doctor Who which is why David Tennant is not dressed as The Doctor and used his own accent.

We suggest watching right to the end of the video!

Saturday 21 May 2016

David Tennant Treat 4 Today for Saturday 21st May 2016

The David Tennant Treat 4 Today is an interview David Tennant gave to the New York edition of Time Out magazine about Richard II (and Broadchurch) in March this year.

The first question asked was 'What about the role of Richard II drew you in?

David's reply was 'I was just fascinated by this capricious and quite likeable character who by the end you feel such great empathy and sympathy for. He’s far from a heroic king, yet he achieves this kind of heroic status by the end through the power of his rhetoric and his wit.

I suppose there are more famous kings in Shakespeare’s plays, but Richard II had always particularly appealed to me. He’s a bit unknowable and surprising.'

Monday 2 May 2016

David Tennant Treat 4 Today for Monday 2nd May 2016

The David Tennant Treat 4 Today is an interview from The Telegraph which David Tennant and Catherine Tate gave just before they opened in Much Ado About Nothing in May 2011.

One question in the article was 'Did you worry Doctor Who fans might bring too much baggage with them?'

David replied 'I know that was said a lot when I did Hamlet for the RSC [in 2008], but, to be honest, it never occurred to me. I just imagined people would be sensible enough not to bring those preconceptions with them. It’s probably slightly naïve, but it genuinely didn’t occur to me with this either. Perhaps it should have done.

It would be disingenuous to suggest that the fact this is happening hasn’t got something to do with the power of Doctor Who, and that’s something I’m wonderfully thankful for. But, for me, the thinking was “I’d like to do a play; I’d like to do Much Ado About Nothing; and it just so happens that the perfect Beatrice in my head is Catherine.” That’s as involved as my thought process was.
'
