The event marked the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death and was broadcast live on BBC Two. It was also screened live in 368 cinemas in the UK and around Europe. It was later screened in more cinemas throughout Europe in the US on Monday 23rd May.
The guests included Joseph Fiennes, David Suchet, Anne-Marie Duff, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alexandra Gilbreath, Helen Mirren, Antony Sher, Tim Minchin, Al Murray, Paapa Essiedu, Simon Russell Beale, Meera Syal, Alyson Moyet, Sanjev Bhaskar and the Royal Ballet. The Prince of Wales was in the audience to watch the show and gave a speech from the stage.
