David Tennant Treat 4 Today for Monday 31st December 2012

Today concludes our look at David Tennant's career during 2012 for the David Tennant Treat 4 Today this week. Today we are looking at his future projects which are 'in the can.'

(A few days ago we posted that we would add a report on David's career during 2012 today but, for a reason which will become obvious, we have had to postpone that until tomorrow.)

From April 2012 until the beginning of December, David Tennant went from one project to another project which will be shown on television in 2013. (He also worked on the Postman Pat movie as well as audio work, fan conventions and other work including another project for Virgin.)

David's first project was Spies Of Warsaw which he filmed in Poland. For this production David's character is 'a dashing spy with an eye for the ladies'! Spies Of Warsaw will be broadcast on 9th and 16th January in the UK, on 6th and 13th February in the US and in Poland it will start being aired on Friday 11th January (but will be dubbed into Polish and will be in 4 parts over consecutive weeks). Other countries such as France will also screen it but have not announced when yet.

Next, David started working almost immediately on The Politician's Husband. This three part drama was written by Paula Milne who wrote the brilliant The Politician's Wife.

David attended the read-through and a photo shoot for The Politician's Husband on Saturday 9th June and filming started on Monday 11th June 2012. It continued until Wednesday 25th July. No date has been announced yet for when this will be broadcast on the BBC.

Next David Tennant filmed Broadchurch for ITV. In this eight part drama David Tennant plays DI Alec Hardy, a newly promoted gritty detective who investigates crimes which other policeman have been unable to solve, The drama explores what happens to a small community when it suddenly becomes the focus of a major event and is subjected to the full glare of the media spotlight.

Filming started on Monday 13th August 2012 in Somerset, Dorset and the Clevedon area and finished in the early hours of Wednesday 5th December. The read-through for at least the first filming block was on Tuesday 7th August which was soon after David returned from the US for a trip to promote Spies Of Warsaw.

Some of David's fans have remarked that David Tennant wasn't on television much during 2012 but, with these three projects and The Escape Artist, plus his other future work, I think we can safely predict that 2013 will be a bumper year for David Tennant and his fans!

Happy New Year from all of us at DavidTennantOnTwitter.com!

David Tennant Treat 4 Today for Sunday 30th December 2012

Continuing our look at David Tennant's career during 2012 for the David Tennant Treat 4 Today this week, today we are looking at Comedy World Cup.

There were seven episodes of this light-hearted quiz show where teams of comedians were asked questions about comedy.

The programme aired on Saturday evenings on Channel Four and was broadcast at the same time that BBC One and ITV had their popular Strictly Come Dancing or Britain's Got Talent type shows so it was always going to be a struggle in the ratings.

David Tennant was the quiz-master and it was knock-out competition with four heats, two semi-finals and a final which Johnny Vegas won with team-mates Josh Widdicombe and Mick Miller. A pilot was also filmed (although not broadcast) in front of an audience.

The Comedy World Cup page on DavidTennantOnTwitter.com shows all the results in a table. However, as the two semi-finals were not played in order, the heat order has been changed.

Some fans of David loved the series and some loathed it but of great interest each week were the different T-shirts which David would wear as they all featured a different comedian on the front.

These are photos of all of David's T-shirts.

David Tennant Treat 4 Today for Saturday 29th December 2012

Continuing our look at David Tennant's career during 2012 for the David Tennant Treat 4 Today this week, today we are looking at his one-off programmes.

Leaving aside programmes where he was interviewed (e.g. The One Show or Attack Of The Show), during 2012 David Tennant appeared in four one-off programmes and coincidentally they were in chronological successive broadcast order! The four were Shakespeare Uncovered, True Love, Discovering Hamlet and The Minor Character.

The first one broadcast was The Minor Character which was part of a Playhouse Presents series of individual dramas. David's episode scored Sky Arts highest ever recorded audience at that time and left lots of fans puzzling what it all meant!

The next programme was Discovering Hamlet which was a programme purely about Shakespeare's famous play and David was one of the actors interviewed.

Next came True Love which was mainly improvised and was a series of five dramas set in the seaside town of Margate. Some of the characters were involved in more than one of the episodes but David only starred in the first one.

David's fourth one-off programme was Shakespeare Uncovered (originally called Prefaces To Shakespeare) which was a series of six documentaries where actors each examined a different play. David looked at Hamlet in depth and proved what a great understanding he has about the play.

To revert back to the David Tennant Treat 4 Today this video from Shakespeare Uncovered shows David explaining about all the 'baggage' attached to Hamlet.

David Tennant Treat 4 Today for Friday 28th December 2012

Continuing our look at David Tennant's career in 2012 as the David Tennant Treat 4 Today each day this week and today we are looking at his radio appearances.

In fact, compared to 2010 and 2011 David Tennant has been on the radio far less this year. This is mainly because he has had less to promote during 2012. Something which will certainly change at the beginning of 2013!

However, rather than having a MP3 of a part of one of David's interviews, the David Tennant Treat 4 Today is his hilarious version of the song Gold!

As Britain won so many gold medals in the London 2012 Olympics, Christian O'Connell planned to play the Spandau Ballet song for each gold medal or at least a version of their song.

Continuing our look at David Tennant's career during 2012 as the David Tennant Treat 4 Today this week, today we are looking at his television voice-over work.

David started the year with a couple of nature documentary programmes / series - Earthflight (which BBC HD are starting to repeat tonight) and Wild About Pandas.

In March the documentary We Won't Drop The Baby was broadcast and in October the programme titled Secret Universe: The Hidden Life of the Cell.

Of course, David Tennant's most popular television voice-over this year was the second series of the comedy Twenty Twelve which looked at the run-up to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The video today is from Twenty Twelve. (It is a BBC video so hopefully it will play worldwide.)

David Tennant Treat 4 Today for Wednesday 26th December 2012

On Monday on DavidTennantOnTwitter.com we'll be posting a report looking at David Tennant's career during 2012 in detail but it is tradition (at least we did it last year!) during Christmas and New Year for the David Tennant Treat 4 Today to examine a different aspect of David's career each day.

Today we are looking at his movie releases during 2012.

There were three movie released and The Decoy Bride was the first one as it was released on 9th March in cinemas and on DVD a few days later.

Although a favourite among David's fans, it was not a massive financial success and David Tennant was not involved in any of the promotion for the movie.

David's next movie was The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists which was released in the UK on 28th March.

David voiced the young Charles Darwin in the movie which was released worldwide and was a financial and critical success.

David Tennant only did one day of promotion for that movie but it included a couple of breakfast radio shows, press interviews and he attended the London premiere that evening.

David's final movie was Nativity 2 Danger In The Manger! which was released in the UK and Ireland on 23rd November.

For this movie David Tennant only attended the premiere but during that appearance they crammed in loads of video interviews which were gradually released over the next week or so.

That movie was almost universally disliked by the critics but provided to be a very popular Christmas movie at the box office as it has stayed in the top five since it has been released (and that was against some tough competition). In fact a recent article said that Nativity 2 is expected to be the most successful UK independent movie of 2012!

After all that the David Tennant Treat 4 Today is probably the funniest video interview David did all year which was to promote Nativity 2:

David Tennant Treat 4 Today for Friday 21st December 2012

The David Tennant Treat 4 Today are some lovely comments Doctor Who actress Tracy Ifeachor made about David Tennant after filming episodes of the programme with David Tennant in an interview on the BBC website.

Her comments were:
And I remember meeting David Tennant. He was in the queue for lunch and I said 'hi, I'm Tracy' and I told him I liked his Hamlet.

Whenever he came onto the set, it was like a wave of sunshine, the effect he has on everyone. He's just a genuine, nice guy. And he really helped me, he was so approachable.

David Tennant Treat 4 Today for Tuesday 18th December 2012

The David Tennant Treat 4 Today is an extract from David Tennant's recent interview in The Big Issue magazine.

This section is where David speaks about Doctor Who:

David's combination of intelligence, wit, energy and genuine compassion – his emotional, indignant film about Ugandan children suffering with malaria almost melted down the Comic Relief phone lines last year – made him seem like a real-life example of the ‘brain over brawn, kindness over cruelty’ superhero. The Doctor was a role he says he had coveted since he was a small boy. But now that the dust has settled, does he still miss it?

“I don’t think there was a single moment that was too shaky,” he says. “I left feeling like it had just been a rare and heady time. I never got bored, it was never a chore. I left feeling incredibly good about it and I haven’t really paused to take stock. It’s still something I’m recognised for pretty much all the time and something I’ll forever be proud of.”

In one of his very last lines on the show he stopped what he was doing, a look of fear and sadness fell over his face and he shouted “I don’t want to go”. That was about more than the Doctor facing regeneration, wasn’t it?

“Aahh,” he pauses. “I think that was a very clever line. It absolutely made sense in terms of character – that’s exactly what that version of the Doctor would say. So it didn’t break the fiction. But at the same time it was a bigger line than that. It was partly Russell [T Davies] expressing how he felt about leaving the show because we were all leaving together.

“We all felt it was the right time to go – we’d given it all we could – but at the same time we all knew there would be nothing else we’d ever do that would be quite like this. You might have real success doing something else, you’ll work on other things, but whatever happens this is unique. There’s nothing else like Doctor Who. In the world. So yes, it was a bittersweet goodbye.”

There was some confusion on Thursday with the David Tennant Daily Photo (which we post each day onto our Facebook page) as there were two daily photos that day!

Consequently, as it was such a great photo, the David Tennant Treat 4 Today is one of the photos:

Thursday 6 December 2012

David Tennant Treat 4 Today for Thursday 6th December 2012

The David Tennant Treat 4 Today is an interview from 2002 when David (and other actors) were asked about their theatre debut.

This is David Tennant's part of the article:

I made my professional debut with the 7:84 Scottish Theatre Company in a touring production of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui.

The 7:84 was formed by John McGrath in the 1970s and is still going strong. It takes two or three shows a year on one-night-stand tours around the Highlands and Islands, stopping longer in the larger towns.

Anyway, I went for the audition just after graduating from the Royal Scottish Academy aged about 20 - a single-minded youngster. I had started there at the tender age of 17 - and landed the part of Giri the hitman which was my first professional part.

I think there can have been only about six of us in the production. I suspect for monetary reasons rather than artistic ones!

Arturo Ui was one of those Brecht plays with thousands of characters; inevitably, we shared them all out, with the help of a few wigs and fake noses. It was great fun; we were all young and up for it. Three of us had been at drama school together, and I was terrifically excited. I was fresh out of college and really rather green, but I was earning a proper wage and having enormous fun touring Scotland in a small van.

Our first stop was Motherwell Civic Hall and the first performance was a disaster. We hadn't had time to finish the technical rehearsal, let alone attempt a dress rehearsal. We might have managed had the production not been so complicated. But we were a group of travelling players who unpacked and made themselves up on stage so, of course, everyone was changing, swapping props, losing props and mislaying wigs.

It was utter chaos on stage as we struggled past the point at which we had ended the technical run. I remember thinking at one point: "This is my professional debut, and it is all falling apart."

But we got through it. It may have been rusty and received terrible reviews, but the whole thing had a vibrancy and energy that I adored. And, of course, I thought we were excellent.
